Blind Spots
 

X6 owners how bad do you find the blind spots on the vehicle to be - both when driving and when trying to park

Also how much of a pain is loading & unloading the rear hatch

The new generation of X'rs have different styled side view mirrows which helps to limit the blind spots, but it is still there! I still have to quickly turn my head to make sure there is nothing before changing lanes though.

Rear hatch loading not a problem, although I miss the X5's split trunk as we could always place stuff on the lower lid. 3M the color coded top portion of the bumper, otherwise you or your dogs might scratch it. Also, if your garage has a low roof, you'll need to decrease trunk opening size, which means that you will be leaning into the trunk space to avoid bashing your head.

Yeah - its no worse than most other cars when on the move - the size of the mirrors helps a lot for blindspots and if you are not sure you can always just look over your shoulder.

In the X6 the backup camera is definatly a must for tight parking lots though - there is no way of knowing what is behind you otherwise.

As far as loading the trunk - its all relative - because there is no split folding hatch it is less of a reach, but because of the height of the trunk a short person (like my wife) still have a hard time reaching the far back. The real issue though is definatly the painted bumper - we keep a blanket in the car to cover it if we need to load big things.

I cannot help but draw our attention to a video of a TERRIBLE accident involving an X6 when reversing. I do not know whether it could happen to anyone (I do not drive an X6) and wonder whether the rear view is downright dangerous.

you could have helped it. i find the x6 to be a pointless look at me im different vehicle. i couldnt believe when i tried it out just how bad the blind spots were and that the salesman couldnt fit in the back seats..

One thing I was taught as someone authorised to drive Police vehicles, and as an ex-motorcyclist is the 'lifesaver' turn before changing lanes etc. It's too easy to miss something in blind spots, and it does surprise how many normal cars have such large ones or even how poor the rear visibility is. The rear windscreens in some modern cars are incredibly narrow vertically.

I've spec'd my new E71 40D with the all round camera system for parking as I know my wife will struggle otherwise coz she's such a wee lassie.

I'll miss the moving load floor I have in the E53 too which makes getting heavy items in and out of the trunk so much easier. That rear bumper area concerns me as well, so I have also ordered a protector to go over it otherwise I can see it all ending in tears with a scratch (or worse).

I don't find the rear visibility too bad. If you're constantly looking in your rearview and sideview mirrors you pretty much know who is where. I always turn my head when changing lanes. Changing lanes to the right was tough at first. The C pillar is right in your field of vision. It took some getting used to.

I don't find parking a problem at all.

After a week or so of ownership my experience is that visibility out the rear window is no problem. Side view visibility is also fine. I agree with cmyX6go that changing lanes to the right takes some getting used to due to the C pillar

So, it only takes a week to get used to it? Good deal! Now, I guess I am going to have to decide on what color and options...hint, hint. Guess what I'm ordering!

In ain't elegant, but a pair of stick-on convex mirrors, medium large for the pass
side, and smaller for the driver's side, cures all blind spots ills, precludes snapping
heads around, etc. I've had them on every thing I own with wheels, for decades...
