The Official WestFest IV Information Thread

First off thank you all for your patience. It is has been a very long time since the discussion about a West Coast meet came up but the wait will be worth it. Putting these events on are not easy and trying to please everyone is very difficult so I apologize in advance if anyone cannot make it. I'd love to have everyone out but that's not realistic. I am very excited about the event and the level of enthusiasm for it. So here it is:

WestFest IV will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Indio is in the Palm Springs area which is about 2 hours by car from Los Angeles. More details as far as location, times, local amenities, etc will be provided later. I just wanted to get the official date and location out so you can start planning.

This event will be amazing. We had an incredible turnout at WestFest III with about 25 X5's making the trip out. This time I am hoping for even more X5's and with the inclusion of X3's, we will have an impressive showing. This is an opportunity to really meet the people you've been "meeting" here, put faces with names, see some cool BMW's, and late October in the Palm Springs area is the perfect time for a weekend getaway.

Crevier BMW is our main sponsor and they are generously providing catered food, door prizes, and awesome raffle prizes. Their Parts Department Team will be there to meet everyone. They really enjoy these events and enjoy just hanging out with fellow BMW enthusiasts. It is through the generosity and enthusiasm of Crevier that we can have this meet. They sponsored the previous WestFests and have been with us for a long time. They are truly an old friend.

Tom G. from EAS is also helping me make this event a reality. He will be in attendance with his demo X5 and M3 to show off the latest and greatest products from EAS. He's got some hot new products and you will not be disappointed. He's been a good friend to us here at X5world and the answer man on iPod and video-in-motion issues. He might even have some products there for sale so you can go home with some extra goodies.

Invision Industries has also helped make this event possible. They are the manufacturers of those trick headrest monitors that we all want and many members here have. Lawrence (acedeucy) has been on X5world and has become one of the gang as well as providing support and information, not to mention offering some special deals for us. Lawrence might be able to make it out to California from Florida but either way, we'll have the latest brochures and information from Invision. He's been very supportive of us and he and his company are continuing to develop that relationship with us.

I will be providing additional details and more more information about the venue, the area, and local amenities. I am planning on having a website up soon. I am also going to set up a dedicated e-mail address for questions and RSVP's. (Note: You must RSVP so that we have an accurate head count for food and other stuff. A post will come later with that address.) Please stay tuned but for now, you've got the date and the place so get planning!

Link to the initial WestFest IV thread

EDIT: The e-mail addresss for WestFest IV is westfest4_@_gmail._c_o_m. (Remove underscores). e-mail to RSVP with the number attending including yourself and e-mail with questions.

Kool & the Gang- I'm 90% probable to make it. Looking at hotels now- appreciate it if you can post info on accomodations soon as you can. Will there be an "official" hotel, etc.

I don't have an official hotel yet but I'm going to try and find one. The last time I went to a large hotel, The Marriott Desert Springs Resort, they wanted a guaranteed number of rooms and if that minimum wasn't met they I would be on the hook for it. No thank you. I was able to get some reduced rates at a couple of places. The website should have some links to local tourism places. Also, if you have specific questions, I'll have the WF e-mail address up soon.

Looking forward to you coming out to the West Coast JV!

Hi Kirk!

I was going to call you but the recent planning got fast and furious. Yes, the 28th is the date that is set in stone. The site is booked and Crevier has it on their calendar. I really hope that you can make it out since you're so close by. It would be fantastic to have another local guy there.

I don't see much of the latter showing up. Ya know, just a hunch based on personal experience.........;)

Don't be hatin'. This is SoCal and there are lots of BMW people out here who will come out. If we can get 25 X5's out 3 years ago there is absolutely no reason why we can't get some X3's out too.

Help promote the event in the X3 Forum and we can prove your past experiences wrong.

Oh MyLanta, I feel you on that 100%

I'm gonna book at one of the Westins and use some Starwood Rewards unless some other option presents itself.

Looking forward to it, and don't forget I still have the "WELCOME X5WORLD" banner if you need it!

JV - don't be making any reservations yet. Let's all try and stay at the same place. We had a blast in DC.

Would be nice to wait, but this thing is about 6 weeks away at this point. I'm playing it safe and if I need to change my hotel, I can do it later:thumbup:

Great to hear that you'll be there. I don't know if they can get an E70 by then but I'll ask. I do know that they'll be bringing a Carbon Black 4.4 though. :)

Southwest has a huge hub on Ontario, Ca. Ditto for Burbank, Orange County (Is that John Wayne Airport), and LAX. It looks like Ontario (ONT), which is on the east side of greater LA, is the closest.

Edit: Palm Springs (PSP) is actually THE closest, it looks like Expedia has some offerings via Salt Lake..

Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is right in the area. It's super convenient and an easy airport to get in and out of. It's basically a regional airport that is "international" because you can fly to Canada from there. Ontario is usually a little cheaper and SW flies into ONT and not PSP, it is about an 1.25 hours away. I usually fly out of PSP and pay a little more just to avoid the drive and stress of traffic/missing my flight.

Hotels are aplenty here. We've got everything from Motel 6 to The Lodge (formerly the Ritz Carlton). This is a tourist area so there are lots of hotels. FYI: Palm Springs is pretty cool but it's a little off the beaten path from Indio/Palm Desert/Rancho Mirage. I would recommend staying in the more central area of Palm Desert or Rancho Mirage. The Marriott Desert Springs or Marriott Rancho Las Palmas are good. There is a Westin in Rancho Mirage. Those are just some ideas. I'll keep thinking....

I just looked at a brochure for a training I'm attending in Indian Wells and it reminded me of a few more hotels.
  • Hyatt Grand Champions Resort and Spa
  • Renaissance Esmerelda Resort and Spa
  • Miramonte Resort and Spa
  • La Quinta Resort and Club
  • Embassy Suites Palm Desert

I was upset. I came up with this great costume for a party, then my friend pulled out her back (that happens at our age  ) and the party was off. I was just looking at the leopard cape, black mini skirt, boots, etc that are in my closet and thinking "What the hell am I ever going to do with this get up?"

How about you bring the white one. :nanana: Bring them both because we need more X3 representation. So far the X3 guys have not been expressing any interest. What's up with that???

Beats me. I am finding that enthusiasm among X3 owners is fairly limited. I almost think that because there is so little to do to them (insofar as the aftermarket is concerned) there is less rabid enthusiasm. Who knows?

Are you going to come to the LA Chapter auto-x on 10/22 at Hollywood Park?

You're probably right but for most of us, the enthusiasm comes from the ownership experience and commeraderie. You've got both hence you're coming. :D

I won't be coming in for that event. I'll be sneaking away from the wife to do the BMW Performance Drive at California Speedway on the 17th.

I think LAX is the closest international airport. Don't know if the other So Cal airports are international. It is 125 miles to Palm Springs. Are you going to get the award for the longest distance traveled?

X5 Sport 09-30-2006 07:38 AM

I am just thinking about it at the moment if I can get flights at a good price I might make the trip also might get to see some of the other places Cali has to offer. The main problem for us from the UK everything is so cheap! So have to go mad buying clothes and stuff and that is before I start on bits for the X5

Try the Palm Springs International airport first (PSP), the next closest would be the Ontario (ONT) airport. It is in Riverside county which is much closer than (LAX) LA county.

UK in the house! I got an e-mail from X5Sport before I check this thread but that would be insane if he came all the way from the UK. He'll blame me because we exchanged some e-mails and I wrote that it was too bad he couldn't come to WestFest but maybe we'll have a meet in Florida next year. Well I guess that got him thinking. :D

If he does come, we need to get him a bigtime prize for winning the distance award.

X5 Sport 10-01-2006 11:59 AM

Yes PNG it is totally your fault! Giving me crazy ideas! I can get the flights to LAX £350 per person which is not that bad car hire about £250 Not a X5 :-( Any recomendtions on hotels reasonably cheap ish.

X5Sport,
From PNG's WestFestThread post:

"Hotels are aplenty here.

  • Embassy Suites Palm Desert" End of Paste...
Several of us have rooms booked at La Quinta Resort & Club...
they have rooms from about 85+ pounds a night and higher
for different packages. See link for details...
http://www.laquintaresort.com/accomm...s/packages.asp

hope ya'll can make the long ride across the Pond and this
country!

Just another reminder to those who plan on coming and have not RSVP'd, please do so. It will really help me out and make sure we have enough food and prizes.

Also, there is a special prize for those who RSVP'd. I'm taking care of that. It's cool. :D

Check the website for more info.

Wow - Is X5 Sport our furthest member coming to the meet?

X5 Sport 10-13-2006 05:53 PM

Well it is 11+ hours at 550mph So must be 6000 miles ! Just have to book the car and the hotel now.Just could not risk the flights going up again, otherwise I would have never been able to make it. Be prepaired for some more silly questions on Palm springs and hire cars coming very soon LOL

No such thing as silly questions when you're traveling 6000 miles. I'm only traveling 2500 or so miles - you should hear the questions I've come up with for Kev.

I can't believe you're coming across the pond and across the states. That is so cool

Most people drag their feet, but you only drag one foot. I'm impressed :nanana: . I show $300 per night now online with no discounts. You snooze you lose, quit dragging that foot!

WestFest IV Update

Well boys and girls it's about 10 days away from the day :-)
I have a few things I would like to announce.
Tulsa Rib Company has agreed to drive out to Indio to feed us all. I promise you won't be disappointed.
BBQ Chicken 1/4's
BBQ Baby Back Ribs
BBQ Western Style Beans
Rice
Cole Slaw
Corn Bread
Cookies and other sweets.
We will provide the drinks (sorry non-alcoholic only)
I had to commit to at least 80 people. So if the turnout is as good as expected we should be just fine. If the turn-out is not as good as expected no worries I'll bring some disposable containers that you can take back to your hotel rooms to snack on.

Jaime from Meguiars will bring the big beast of a detail truck and offer a car care demonstration to anyone interested. I don't normally like to sell any products at these types of events, but I agreed to allow Meguiars to sell his great products directly to you if you are interested. At WestFest III, Jaime and his team turned out to be one of the highlights of the event. I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

I asked Dinan if they would like to participate, unfortunately they no longer have an X5 to show.....but I do. I will bring my Carbon Black 06-4.4 that I have put some Dinan goodies on, CAI/TB/Strut Brace/Exhaust. I have some Dinan caps and T-Shirts that I will be giving away while I'm there.

Crevier never does anything small and so I don't want to spill it all, but we have some great raffle prizes to give away. I'll leave it all to surprise when the time comes. We will have some goodie bags for all those who RSVP'd. Please don't get left out of the raffle and the rest of the great stuff just because you didn't RSVP. If you plan on coming and haven't RSVP'd yet.......
DO IT NOW

I want everyone to know that Kevin has worked very hard to make this a great event for everyone. Doing something like this can be very time consuming and stressful but he is committed to making WestFest something to be modeled after. As for the WestFest organizers of the past.... We wouldn't be here without you:thumbup:

One last thing, some of you may remember my son Joey. Well he isn’t little anymore and some of you may not even recognize him. He' grown to be taller than me.... wait a minute, everyone is taller than me:confused: Anyway he turns 15 on the Thursday before WFIV. We would like to bring a birthday cake and if you all don't mind sing him a Happy Birthday. That would probably make his day, it would embarrass him but he would still appreciate it.

If anything changes between now and then I will let you know

Joe

Michelle 10-18-2006 11:08 PM

Thanks for the update, Joe!

BTW...we are the birthday pros around here! Between Josh, Laura, and I, we don't miss a beat!

Thanks in advance Joe, you are going to make my year with those ribs :D. You have been there ever since WestFest1, and you will always get the first right of refusal for any and all future WF events as well I'm sure! I am really looking forward to this event, as I am positive that this will be the biggest X5 meet held anywhere in the U.S. thus far!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be awesome! If you are going to come and spend the weekend or part of the weekend I'd get on the stick and make some hotel reservations now. Also, let me know ASAP if you are coming since I'm kind of organizing things. ;)

If Josh leads, we will be there by 4pm or sooner! But I think realistically, 5pm or so with one short stop for lunch and gas. What do you think?

I have done that drive from SF and made it to PS in 8 hours before, so that's what I am thinking.

I was wondering based on what others who live in SoCal have said. That is whatever you do try to head for PS from LA around noon because after that on a friday the traffic is brutal.

True dat. Fortunately you guys can avoid a lot of it by going over the top and not going I-5 to I-10. Cutting through Sylmar, Pasadena, and cutting over to the I-15 from the 210 is best.

Having said that though, it never hurts the leave earlier. Shoot for an hour or two earlier and if you run an hour late you're still doing well.

PS: You might want to contact Josh for some updated info from him.

Shoot me your cellphone number via PM.

If you do get here in time for a wash on Friday, I can direct you to the nearest place to the hotel or the nearest place to wherever dinner is. I washed my X5 tonight but I'm sure it'll get dirty during the week while the wife is driving it. Oh well. I'll have to give it a quick bath later in the week.

Quicksilver 10-23-2006 01:29 AM

Thanks for the directions. Guess i better get out a map or at least see where Navi takes me with a pre-plotted course. The way you describe it seems simple enough although where to pick up 210 from I-10 I will have to look up. Will be at AAA tomorrow. :)

You won't hit the 10 until you've come down the 15 from the 210. You'll pick up the 10 at San Bernardino so you'll have avoided the LA stuff. You will likely slow down considerably on the 10 when you hit Redlands. For some reason it totally bogs down there and then opens right back up. Strange....

blondboinsd 10-23-2006 01:21 PM

Schweet My X5 got detailed friday

Quicksilver 10-23-2006 02:15 PM

Not a complaint but it's courious how folks from SoCal see the need to insert THE in front of highway numbers.

Man, you're a picky dude aren't you? ;)

The "the" in front of "10" is necessary unless you have "I" in it as in "I-10". Otherwise it sounds weird to say "take 210 to 15 to 10". It's like how car companies try to personify cars by saying stuff like "Camry is the best car in its class". On the other hand, saying "take the Interstate 210 to the Interstate 15 to the Interstate 10" is bananas. There the "the" is superfluous.

Then again, maybe we're thinking to much about this. :tsk:

Actually not picky at all. I need a writing class in all honesty. (I violate the your You're usage all the time);)

In fact what sounds weird to you is what we in NorCal do all the time. Example from pleasanton take 580 to 680 north, then west on 24 to 580, then head west on 80 towards San francisco. Notice THE is not used once in reference to any interstate. THE is not necessary to state the abvious.

Don't take it personally. I use to Live in SoCal. Graduated from Gardena High so i have always noticed those little cultural FUN differences. :) I didn't mean to make a big deal out of it. We NorCal folks notice it sometime and we like to give our SoCal neighbors what for in jest.:nanana: But we still love ya:rofl:

No offense taken and now that you mention it, the NorCal thing is so true. My wife went to grad school up there and I have a sister up there so I've spent my share of time on 680 and 24. :D It didn't even occur to me. Sometimes NorCal and SoCal are like two seperate states.

How true how true.

RSVP's ARE NOW CLOSED!

There has been a tremendous response and I thank all of those sent me their RSVP's. Unfortunately I have to cut them off now. I waited until the latest possible time but that's it. What does that mean? Those who did RSVP are given priority for food since we had to order based on the number of people I knew were coming and only those who RSVP'd will be getting any goodies Crevier is giving away. Sorry but we can only account for the number of people I knew would be there. That's why I kept stressing the need to RSVP.

If you did not RSVP you are not going be turned away by any means but just understand that we have to take care of those who committed and responded early. Thank you for your understanding.

I-10 is unaffected by the fire.

AutoXer 10-28-2006 01:58 AM

You can see the smoke from 10, but no effect on traffic.

JonK 10-28-2006 02:12 PM

I left Valencia CA, Magic Mountain, at 2:45 PM yesterday. Traffic was pretty bad even though I took 210 detour to avoid traffic I got to Cabazon near the fire at 6:20. I didn't hear any road blockage from Sirius radio.

At 9:40 pm while on our way to La Quinta I was doing 80 mi/hr there was a crazy pickup truck driver making a U-turn on the freeway right in front of me. He stuck his nose and I veered of just by few inches. Without my evasive move I am certain that my X would have made few spins and there would have been massive freeway pile up. Very close call.

JonK 10-30-2006 03:41 AM

I was introduced to a sucker game called 3 card poker. Regular multi-deck black jeck yells 53:47 favored odds to the house but this game turned out to be more like 65:35. It cost me 1 g to find that out.
