LOL...actually, I think he was looking for screws to remove prior to baking! The Angel Eyes mod is in desperate need of a VERY detailed step-by-step DIY!

AutoXer 11-12-2006 11:47 PM

I think an appropriate title would be "X5 Mod's Thankgiving Feast" ;) Nice photos.

Big props to Tijanaw for leading the way on this mod and to blackbeauty for letting us "experiment" with her new lights! She needs to post some pics soon!
Big thanks to SG and Michelle for helping out and to ekaz with the telephone tech support:2thumbs:

We def need to hook Michelle up.
Ekaz is the man as always!

Anyhow, glad you had a great time at the X5 mini-meet!!

ekaz 11-16-2006 09:53 AM

Today in the Iron JV Kitchen Stadium we have a battle of epic proportions.....X5world members vs. BMW X5 and today's secret ingredient.............
Angel Eyes!
The X5world members have 1 day to bake, unseal, install AE's, re-bake, reseal and install the AE's; all WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS!
Can it be done?!:nanana: :nanana:

I'm glad I was able to assist, actually, wish I was there.

Just a side note after seeing the pics......you could've used some blue painters tape to hold the rings while the silicone dried.

If someone is willing to donate a light and a set of AE's, I'd be willing to get a set of instructions and maybe a video together of installing the AE's.
The basic instuctions would go something like:
TEST RINGS BEFORE PROCEEDING! (wouldn't it suck to do all this and then have them not work?) If you hear the infamous "bink" while installing rings, it probably broke, so re-test to verify.
  1. pre-heat oven
  2. open beer
  3. shake head a you place a headlight assembly on cookie sheet and place in pre-heated oven
  4. finish beer
  5. remove headlight
  6. detach clear lense from headlight
  7. remove (4?) screws to remove inner housing
  8. remove waffles if desired
  9. attach rings with silicone
  10. secure rings with tape while silicone dries
  11. while silicone dries, drill hole in housing for wires to pass through
  12. carefully remove tape
  13. attach inner housing to main assembly
  14. run wires for AE's through back of assembly
  15. clip clear lense back on
  16. rebake entire assembly
  17. remove from oven
  18. squeeze 2 halfs together until secure
  19. drink another beer

Michelle 11-16-2006 10:54 AM

We "secured" it with some scotch tape, but the silicone takes hours to dry!

ekaz 11-16-2006 11:26 AM

What kind did you guys use? I don't remember it taking that long. Anywho.....

How many kinds of silicone there are, we used regular silicone. The other issue I have with this is the fact the as soon as the temperature drops below 65, my drivers side rings stay dim. Now that I've contacted JL, here is the answer I got:

You are experiencing the cold start issue with arises when the rings
get cold. They will pop right to life when you start the car or run the
engine for a bit. We do have cold weather ballasts available for
purchase which eliminate this issue. The only problem is that the ballasts do
decrease the life span of the rings from 19 to about 10 years assuming
you use them 3 hours a day 365 days a year.

I think this is BS and we shouldn't have to pay for cold weather ballast after dishing out $200. On top of that, mine don't come back to life at all unless the temperature goes north of 65.
JL SHOULD DEF ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.

Now that's just wrong. He should at least put it in the product description that if it get cold where you live, you're screwed or at least recommend "cold weather ballasts" whatever those are. Why not supply heavy duty ballasts with ALL the kits which would probably relieve the cold weather issue too.

Exactly my thinking, why would you wanna make money on us twice for the same freakin product:mad:  . Not only the connectors issues, smaller rings issues, now this.
He got to address this, the sooner the better!

hayaku 11-16-2006 06:39 PM

man you guys look so professional and serious... when we do a diy in my garage, there's a whole lotta colorful language being used cuz we all know that's how you really get things done...

Dr_Smith 11-16-2006 07:46 PM

that's it, I'm opting out of doing this mod. I've had reservations about ordering from JL, and now my fears are worse. Living in Canada where in the winter it's routine to have -20c weather, there's no way the eyes will work, let alone having to pay MORE for "cold weather ballasts"!!! Ridiculous and far from the customer service I would expect from someone selling to high end automobile enthusiasts.

hey rob!! :-)
yes, those are your headlights! as soon as i get my "boi" back i will post pics. promise!

again, tx.

on another note.

i was surprised about a couple of things:

1) the "ring" (AE) didn't fit properly around the light
2) considering the price i expected a better quality

who knows if i will have the same problem tidiane has once the bitter cold hits. right now i have the feeling the "ring" will fall off and "dangle" in the lense since we used glue and 3m double sided tape to hold it in place.

Personally...I would say it's worth paying $300 to have someone very experienced do the install but now that I hear about these issues with ballasts, etc. I'm not so sure of that anymore

I'll be honest I think it's still one of my fav mod if not my fav. I didn't have to put the rings in my own, Ekaz took care of that 4 me therefore wiring was the only thing I had to deal with and that was cake compared to baking.... when it's cold sometimes one of the ballast has issues firing up but that's really not an ubearable issue to me as I just ignore it till it comes back to life. So my take of all this, I 'd do it over and over again cuz the look is amazing.

Dr_Smith 11-30-2006 04:57 PM

thx for the feedback guys. baking doesn't scare me, but a substandard product does.

Yeah, I agree with tijanaw. i definitely LOVE the look and prefer it so much more than one i had before. however, once i get back to the states, i will need help with the wiring of the new ballasts (one already blew out).

i shoulld have paid attention when tijanaw was installing it!!
