New 2008 X5 owner in SOCAL. Another Inland Empire resident.

Maybe a ride up to Big Bear/ Lake Arrowhead area?

Anyone have a travel route suggestion?

This being my first "BMW X5" meet, I don't know what you all expect. Or how adventuristic, you all are with your vehicles.

I know the San Bernardino mountains pretty well. With me traveling all over the SB mountain roads, fire road, trails in my 4X4 truck, dirt bikes, and street bikes.

Also, how long of a day you want to make of it.

I have a really fun route that is adjustable. I can make it a long route that would take most of the day, or we can cut it in half if we want to make it a shorter day. A very brief route description. If we go for it, I'll provide details, places where we can eat, gas up, etc..

Long Route:
• Meet @ 10 & 15 fwy interchange (meet at Victoria Gardens/ Bass Pro). Convienent for everyone coming from 10,60,91,210,215 fwy to meet.
• 10 fwy to Redlands
• Taking the 38 to Big Bear (back route)
• From Big Bear taking the 18 towards Lake Arrowhead
• Take 173 to Lake Arrowhead
• For those wanting to go off pavement, take dirt road to Lake Silverwood. Take 138 to 15 fwy (El Cajon pass). Split up and go home.

• For thos not willing to take their vehicles off paved road. Take 173 back to the 18. Take 18 West towards the 30/210 fwy. Form there split up and go home.

Short Route: Will just eliminate the Big Bear portion of the drive. Just go directly to Lake Arrowhead.

How many of you are up for taking your vehicles off paved roads? I'm NOT talking about 4X4ing off rough terrain.

I know of a graded dirt fire road that would take us from the North side of Lake Arrowhead to Lake Silverwood. The dirt fire road is very very mild. Hard packed dirt, no loose soil, no creek crossing, no rocks to go over, no brush or tree branchs to brush up against your vehicle to cause scratches.

There should be no way for a SAV to get stuck or get into any trouble. This isn't a hard core Jeep 4X4 trail. A normal car (normal car ride height), could take this dirt road.

If anyone else has a suggestion or wants to take LEAD, by all means feel free to step up or make some suggestions.

Also, with the recent fires at Lake Arrowhead, I don't know if this dirt road is current'y open. I can call the Ranger Station or take my motocycle up to check it out.

I wouldn't care what other types of vehicles want to show up. My brother has a Tourareg, I'll see if he wants to join in on the trip.

I figured with the Holidays here, the earliest we can go is right after new Years? Early January, before the heavy rains & snows hit the mountains. February is usually when it really gets wet up in the mountains.

i think redhorse has nailed it! i'd do the long route and consider the dirt road.

I used to live in Manhattan Beach: 2nd St & Morningside Drive. I went to Robinsons Elemenatary. I still love that beach community, some fond memories there.
