California is another country for me, distinctly separate from the United States. It feels like something you'd need to get a visa for in order to travel there.

According to Webster:

Illegal:
: not according to or authorized by law : unlawful, illicit ; also : not sanctioned by official rules (as of a game)

Alien:
1 a: belonging or relating to another person, place, or thing : strange: b: relating, belonging, or owing allegiance to another country or government

So illegal alien is an accurate description IMO.
