In the X5 there is an extension cable that in essence "daisy chains" the video module to the nav module. I'm not sure how they did it in the 3-series, but I would suspect it is something similar.

If so, the fact that you have a video source coming from the video module is a good indication that the vast majority of the wiring in the vehicle is not the issue. I'd look at the pins on the connector to the MkII to make sure none are bent.

I'd also try to find someone local to you that has a working nav drive unit that you can try swapping between vehicles. This sure sounds like a nav drive issue to me.
