I really dont see where one will spend $4k, even if careless. For the X5 the biggest problem is to find the downpipe (DPF delete), all else is available. We still have special on the Stage1 and 2 tunes for under a grand.
I actually have had laying around a DPF from my flooded parts car and just gutted it and installed it. Some guys are using a 1/2" super long drill bit to drill a few holes in the DPF.
Yes, the DDE's can be cloned, I have had it done, you can read all about it in the e90 forums. Ask BPC or FixMyVW for the service. I believe they charged my $80 for the service. I have one DDE with original programing and a second with a stage 2 JR tune. I can swap between DDE's at will and have done so. This way I can switch between stock and tuned configurations.

I purchased the 2nd DDE for my car from a wrecked X5 35d. The 335D/35D DDEs are interchangeable. I paid about $265 including shipping for the second DDE.
