When the dump happens I back off the gas.

Sounds like it could be the engine warm up cycle...and you're pushing out of it before the cycle has completed. If the engine warm up cylce has engaged...I find that if I drive faster than 10-15 MPH or bring engine RPM up over 2K....there can be an abrupt 1st to 2nd tranny shift. But if I can get away with driving slow enough and keeping RPM low...it will eventually shift into 2nd without a "bump".
If I can tell I'm in engine warm up cycle...but traffic or other circumstances don't allow for "taking it easy"...I just slip the gear shift lever into the S gate...and this cancels the EWC (engine warm-up cycle)...and there's no abrupt 1st-to-2nd shift.
The next time you have a cold engine and the RPM is high and it feels/sounds like it doesn't want to shift into 2nd...try moving the gearshift into the S (sport) gate. This will take the vehicle out of the adaptive drive mode (cancel the engine warm up cycle)...then see if your shift into 2nd gear is smoother. If it is...then the issue is (probably)...you're pushing out of the engine warm up cycle which happens if you go faster than 25 MPH etc before the operating temps reach the specific degree (see info below about engine warm up cycle & normal things that causes it to end):
