Mind you, I am not ascribing to his theory, especially that I had an e38 in the past and one of the 1st things I did after buying it, was to perform a complete transmission service on it, without any ill effects.

I've heard the "don't disturb the transmission oil" theory a couple of times before, and it always gives me pause when I'm contemplating an oil change or a service.

Thoughts?

I read the same on the forums. I was super hesitant but I figured after 14 years and the X5 not being worth much, I'd give it a try.

I didn't replace the filter. I did the least amount possible to not disturb the transmission. My drain and fill doesn't replace all of the fluid either, I think 1/3 of it. So I figured I'm not shocking the transmission with totally different fluid. In 10k miles, I'll do another drain and fill to freshen the fluid some more. So far, after 2k miles, I've had no ill effects.
