I have a '05 3.0i, and like my '98 M3, the oil filter is on top of the engine, which is great because with my Mityvac Fluid Evacuator, I change the oil on both vehicles without ever getting underneath -- no ramps, no jacking. I've tested both ways and the evacuator gets the same amount of oil out. For those with top-mounted oil filters (and lowered vehicles), I recommend getting a Mityvac.
I have several friends that live by the mityvac method and they love them..

I like draining the pan myself. I like to see the oil drain bolt for shavings if its a magnetic one and you can see particles when its draining if something bad is going on. Last but not least I have actually had bolts show up in drain spout on cars that had something really bad go wrong that wouldn't of been found out about early without that method.

But again I know tons of folks using the mityvac and doing just fine with it. My stepdad changes his oil with one.
