N62 V8 Oil Change DIY Video Guide

I finally got to change the oil in my Imola X5 4.4i and made this video to help supplement any newbie V8 owners out there!

Watch the video here on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wohUA-zs3OY

Also let me know what kind of oil you N62 owners are currently using, and where you're located (since that might effect oil weight you're using).

Well-shot DIY video!

I have a '05 3.0i, and like my '98 M3, the oil filter is on top of the engine, which is great because with my Mityvac Fluid Evacuator, I change the oil on both vehicles without ever getting underneath -- no ramps, no jacking. I've tested both ways and the evacuator gets the same amount of oil out. For those with top-mounted oil filters (and lowered vehicles), I recommend getting a Mityvac.

I have several friends that live by the mityvac method and they love them..

I like draining the pan myself. I like to see the oil drain bolt for shavings if its a magnetic one and you can see particles when its draining if something bad is going on. Last but not least I have actually had bolts show up in drain spout on cars that had something really bad go wrong that wouldn't of been found out about early without that method.

But again I know tons of folks using the mityvac and doing just fine with it. My stepdad changes his oil with one.

Haha thanks for the responses guys. My wife has the 3.0i X5 and I can drain the oil in that one without ramps, just slither underneath with a wrench and drain pan. That's thanks to the oil filter being up top. With the 4.4i, need a bit more space to see what you're doing.

I've been changing oil of my '05 n62 without lifting the front. I'm of athletic build and can slither underneath it easily for oil changes and underbelly inspections, but now that I'm lowering the car with H&R spring kit in the front, I think I won't be able to do this any more when I'm done. The kit lowers ride height by 1.2" in the front and 1" in the rear.

Excellent video RichardB. Yeah, I find use of a funnel essential so that oil is not spilled all over the place. By the way, why did you need that lucas additive?

Some important things missing from a video for newbies:

Whatever method is used to raise the vehicle there should always be a second support method used as a safety backup.

When using ramps there should be 'blocks' behind rear wheels.

Mention how important it is to use the proper type/ weight oil specified by BMW.

Video shows stop leak being used. Additives are not a good idea. If it leaks fix it.

Torque specs and torque wrench should be used to tighten filter housing and drain plugs. Too easy to over tighten and cause leaks or worse.

IMO set out only the amount of oil you will need so there is no risk of overfilling. Happens to the best of us.

Should show using a funnel. Too easy to get oil where it shouldn't be.

Should explain that oil should be checked with the engine at operating temp to eliminate possibility of over filling.
