Sounds like a belt problem to me also. If the belt broke, you'd certainly be overheating. It must be slipping. OR, if the alternator is toast, it might be creating a serious drag on the belt, slowing its rotation. Either way, you need to take off the belt, then hand check the pulleys being turned by that belt and the belt itself. Have you been able to hear any strange noises?
