Battery Charge indicator light appeared, please help!!!

Hi all,
Yesterday when I was driving home from work I noticed that a little red battery symbol, indicator light (which indicates the battery isnt being charged) came on, my stearing got stiff and the temperature guage began to rise as the engine started heating up.....I looked in the manual and it says that this symbol has to do with battery not charging and mentiones that there could be a problem with the V-belt alternator...it also goes on to describe the symptoms such as stiff stearing and engine heating as result (which I had both). My question is has anyeone else had this problem and know what it is caused by?? A couple days ago i got locked out of my X5 and a locksmith opened the door...could he have messed something electrical up that causes this problem. Any thought and ideas would help greatly.
Mike

I would say you need to check if you have a "V" belt slipping or missing. It drives the power steering pump, water pump and alternator.

You may also want to have the dealer check whether your alternator is charging enough. Apparently a number of alternators only charge 12v (instead of the 14.4v they should) which can lead to slowly draining your battery. I just had my alternator replaced and it took 3 weeks for it to arrive as there are +400 on national backorder ....

Sounds more like a belt problem. I would be very careful aboiut driving as you have no water pump either. You could ruin the engine. If you are still in warranty get it lifted to the dealership. If not, drive at your own risk.
It can't hurt to have the altenator checked also.
Should be nothing to do with the lock out problem unless they cut your belt somehow???

Sounds like a belt problem to me also. If the belt broke, you'd certainly be overheating. It must be slipping. OR, if the alternator is toast, it might be creating a serious drag on the belt, slowing its rotation. Either way, you need to take off the belt, then hand check the pulleys being turned by that belt and the belt itself. Have you been able to hear any strange noises?

Just found out problem

Hi all,
I just heard back from the BMW dealer and they said that my water pump was bad and siezed which caused the V-belt to break...he also said that since it was the water pump that caused the belt to break that both the water pump and belt will be covered under my certified pre-owned warranty, which is definetly a good thing !!!

How many miles did your water pump last?

Make sure they do the thermostat too! Even if you have to buy it. It is going to have to be changed soon anyway.

I just had a similar problem today. Last night I was driving back from CT and the battery charging light came on. The the dash lite up like a christmas tree. Fortunately I got home but when I took the X5 out this morning it totally died. Had it towed to BMW of Manhattan and they identified the problem as the battery ($400) and the alternator ($1,200). Rather than pay those crooks, I had it towed back to the garage (upper manhattan).

Found an alterator online for under $200 and will pick up a battery at Strauss for under a $100.

Anyone know what is involved with swapping out the alternator on an X5? I have swapped out alternators on prior vehicles so I have an idea what is involved?

Thanks in advance! Joe
