Short story, somehow, even after many checks by multiple people, one of the keepers for an exhaust valve on cylinder 1 either dislodged itself or wasn't seated properly when I released the spring/spring plate to move to the next stem.
There was no misfire prior the work and only presented itself in the moments after the initial start-up, after I did the valve steam seals. I was in the same kind of mind set as you... "I WILL NOT take that valve cover off unless the earth is in peril..., even then, still have to think
real hard about it..."
Again, that was my own experience, so large grains of salt are in order.
