RMS and rear coolant cover

M6 10mm bolts have torque spec of 10NM.

Valve covers and valve seals aren't that bad!
Previous owner was kind enough to do the valve cover gaskets and spark plug tubes.

Update:

All is back together. Now chasing a misfire on #2 and #8.

1 swapped out plugs and coils #2 and #8. nothing

2. Swapped out fuel injector rail from know good running car. nothing.

3. checked and double checked vacuum hoses. nothiing.

My plans are to swap the intake manifold for my known good one. I changed the intake manifold gaskets and thought the new ones were kinda big but fit with a little convincing. This is my last hope before opening back up.

I really don't want to pull off the valve covers until I have to. They are really tricky to get back on out of the car. I can't imagine trying to get it back on in the car. Yes, I double and triple checked my timing before I buttoned it all back up.

When you buy a used engine are you supposed to just plug it in and see how it works before tearing into the valve stem seals and such?

I wonder if the engine PO was chasing a misfire?

If I open it back up and find nothing ie. timing, spring,, I will swap out my old cams for possible worn eccentric shafts ( common issue).

Suggestions?

Just based on my own experience, might as well open it up and take a good hard look at the work you did on the valve seals. You don't have to take the cover all the way off (over the eccentric sensor) to look at #2.

Or, if you can do a leak down and compression test on number 2... Wasn't till I did a compression, leak down and smoke test on mine (Cylinder 1, after much part swapping) that I was able to rule out the rings, many other parts, vaccuum leak, etc and focus on the exhaust valves. Then after much careful inspection, realized one of those wasn't done properly.

May I ask how the one valve wasn't done properly?

If I have a problem, I'm hoping for one of the intake eccentric cam lever springs is off.

Short story, somehow, even after many checks by multiple people, one of the keepers for an exhaust valve on cylinder 1 either dislodged itself or wasn't seated properly when I released the spring/spring plate to move to the next stem.

There was no misfire prior the work and only presented itself in the moments after the initial start-up, after I did the valve steam seals. I was in the same kind of mind set as you... "I WILL NOT take that valve cover off unless the earth is in peril..., even then, still have to think real hard about it..."

Again, that was my own experience, so large grains of salt are in order.

Your post is very helpful.

I've read through your thread and am going to follow it to diagnose my misfire.

My compression test is as follows
1. 195. 5 180
2. 210 * 6 195
3. 195. 7. 180
4. 200. 8. 200*

Not sure what to think about the compression test.
#2 is the highest at 210
#8 is in line at 200

What happens if a eccentric spring lever is off?

I'm thinking this is vacuum and I should unchange those intake manifold seals that seemed too big.

For the spring, check this thread out. I came across it before I started my work and made extra double sure the springs and levers were correct before putting the covers on.

If you're going to go to the trouble of changing the intake seals, you might as well get new ones that are the correct part#. Also, make sure you don't lose any of the metal grommets... I know I've read one thread somewhere (can't find it at the moment) of someone who put the manifold back on and one of those slipped off and ended up melting a hole in the manifold itself.

Do you still have your cracked block? I'm not sure about on the BMW block but I've resleeved a 351 cobra jet & 581 rodac about 35 years ago and had no problems running a blower on one and nitrous on the other...

I'm new to the BMW side so this may be something not possible, but I thought I'd throw it out there in case you wanted to have a spare.

Sorry, you had the misadventure. But your experience now helps me and hopefully, my misadventure helps another.

Anyone ever drive the F15?
It drives like no steering feel at all.
I was thinking of trading up. But after driving the F15, I'm staying away.
