Yep, you have it correctly installed - it holds the centre of the door card in place. Make sure the metal prongs on the mating parts are opened up so they can lock into the black plastic socket when you put the door card back on.
I think my drivers door is missing this part (lost by a previous owner/mechanic/dealer??), as the centre of the door panel doesn't seem as stable as the other three doors. I haven't had a reason to open it up yet (but it has been off before me), but if I ever do so, I'll buy the clip before going in there.
