Two questions…
What is your oil consumption?
Is the “pinging” only under load at high RPM e.g >5,000 rpm?

I ask because…
The risk with “wet engines” that burn a quart every 2k is carbon build up.

Our 2001 X5 4.8i consumed something like 1qt/2k. Unless we drove her pretty hard, she would develop a stutter at high RPM. At the time I was regularly hauling a utility trailer of stuff to the cabin I was building. So on these runs I’d drop her down to sport and hold her into a lower gear as I accelerated up a hill with a fully loaded trailer. After blowing her out in 2nd, I’d work my way up the gears on the next hills until she didn’t stutter in 5th at 6,000 rpm. Of course, blowing her out in 5th required a close watch for cars with those special logos/lights.
