Code 2F7E "Motorabstellzeit, plausibility"

This code keeps coming back after clearing.

Motorabstellzeit translates to "Motor Output Action Time"

Any pointers would be appreciated.

I do get some "pinging" regularly, and occassionally some "surginess" while accelerating from a stop or cruising up a mild grade when it's hot out.

Below are the freeze frames from Carly:

I found this along with a PDF with N55 diag codes. Supposedly it's knock. See post # 5 Can you post the full hex code? 02XF x.x.x. If you reference the N55 document you can see a list for all the 0X2F codes. It's all ignition or timing. If you can grab the exact hex code you'll nail it done. 100%

I just looked up the 2F7E code, The results were DME:Engine switch off-time, plausibility
There was no fault code description, it is possible that if I had the last 7 of your VIN that it may come up with more information. Generically it comes up with no fault code description.

It appears it could also be a Superknocking faults as well.

Just a caution: with modern cars, you should never see a knock- but you will see knock sensor codes. If a knock sensor fults the DME should pull the timing to protect. Not sure about BMW, but dont assume you actually have knocking.....

Thanks for this. Here is what I can pull from Carly: Fault Explanation: CDKCNCLKL 0x2F7E - Motorabstellzeit, plausibility. I’ll plug in and see if I can grab more.

Last 7 of VIN are LZ39375. It’s a N62, so I don’t think super knock is possible, and those generally have their own code.

Two questions…
What is your oil consumption?
Is the “pinging” only under load at high RPM e.g >5,000 rpm?

I ask because…
The risk with “wet engines” that burn a quart every 2k is carbon build up.

Our 2001 X5 4.8i consumed something like 1qt/2k. Unless we drove her pretty hard, she would develop a stutter at high RPM. At the time I was regularly hauling a utility trailer of stuff to the cabin I was building. So on these runs I’d drop her down to sport and hold her into a lower gear as I accelerated up a hill with a fully loaded trailer. After blowing her out in 2nd, I’d work my way up the gears on the next hills until she didn’t stutter in 5th at 6,000 rpm. Of course, blowing her out in 5th required a close watch for cars with those special logos/lights.

I use about a quart of oil every 2,500 miles. The pinging is usually under light to no load at lower RPMs (under 3,000). It gets worse as outside temps get hotter.

Carbon build up would have to be pretty bad to get pre-detonation “under light to no load at lower RPMs (under 3,000)”.

Do you actually hear the pinging? Or just notice a slight engine roughness?

Yes I hear it with the windows down. It’s very noticeable.
