The machines being removed (as shown by that reporter's Twitter, FB and shown on Capitol Hill) are flat sorters aka those used for magazines and similar thin but heavy items. Since the USPS has said they have delivered 8%-12% less magazines per year for more than 5 years those machines sat idle and innsome locations used 70% of the floorspace. So in those areas they would have had to build new buildings to add floorspace for new style package sorting equipment (think Amazon size boxes) because USPS has flat rate standard sized boxes and anything outside that range needs a different machine.
