Depending on the year your buddy's car was made, the factory extended warranty coverage for FRM may still apply.

My 2013 128i had the same headlight issue. Replaced the bulb multiple times but the DRL just won't turn on. I took it to the dealership and they charged an inspection fee but found the fault with the FRM. They reset the module and the DRL is now back in service.

Apparently if the FRM is still salvageable the dealership will not replace it. Therefore you still have to pay the inspection fee.

Sounds like your friend's issue might have beene resolved with a reset of the old FRM.
