thank you everyone that replied so fast. my x5 had been sitting for over a year, so as you guys suggested I believe the brake rotors were a little rusted. I also underestimated the weight of the vehicle and I definitely was not able to move it on my own.

I was lucky and was able to get the car started enough to limp into my garage on it's own power. I owe everyone a beer! thanks for the help.
