I have nothing against high-mileage cars. I've somehow wrung 229,000 out of my '92 Pathfinder with minimal expenditure, but that 2000 X5 is another situation entirely.

The problem you'll likely face is that with that first model year build, you'll spend a lot of time in a loaner car. The '00's and even the '01s are notorious for nickel & dime troubles, which in a BMW shop turn out to be U.S. Grant and Ben Franklin troubles right quick. A good independent BMW shop will expect at least $75 per hour for labor, a dealer sometimes more than $120 per. Factor that in to your purchase price.
