Unless you just want to give your money away I would run. Basically if you don't know the history, its just a matter of time before you have to shell out major dollars with ANY BMW.

Depends on the price and your tolerance for maintenance costs.
I wouldn't pay too much for a car that will cost a significant amount to keep on the road.... look at something with lower miles...

If your first X5 and you don't know the history, or ou are not a mechanic, save your money. An exception would be if someone could produce service records for the entire life of the car. But even so, tires, belts, valves, wrist pins, transmissions, suspension components, brakes--they all wear out eventually. Keep shopping?

I'd for a CPO car. (Presuming you live in the U.S. - I do think BMW offers similar programs in other parts of world).
If you do consider buying it, take it to a dealer and have the dealer look up the service history (they can run the key and see what was performed on the vehicle) & run a carfax. Someone posted a thread a couple days ago about buying a 60k mile X5 and got lots of responses... looking there would be a good start. Good luck with your purchase regardless. |

For 5ish more you could buy this one:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-items...d-5-speed.html Or, one similar... Not Pumping the Doc's ride; it's just a handy and good example of what's out there on the mkt. An '00 with 100K+ miles is like buying a renter's 15 yr old singlewide trailer and thinking you can really fix it up. I'd pass and keep looking; there are BMW stlr Lots Full of Xs out there in used car/off lease land. GL,md

Take your good money and lease a new/newer model. Then all the headaches will belong to somebody else!

I have nothing against high-mileage cars. I've somehow wrung 229,000 out of my '92 Pathfinder with minimal expenditure, but that 2000 X5 is another situation entirely.
The problem you'll likely face is that with that first model year build, you'll spend a lot of time in a loaner car. The '00's and even the '01s are notorious for nickel & dime troubles, which in a BMW shop turn out to be U.S. Grant and Ben Franklin troubles right quick. A good independent BMW shop will expect at least $75 per hour for labor, a dealer sometimes more than $120 per. Factor that in to your purchase price. Good luck with the search/purchase. JV

I have to agree as my low milage '01 is popping stupid little problems all the time. My CPO expires in November and I'm trying to work out what to do with it. Just had water pump/thermostat/belts done 3 weeks ago and then it blew a LKM. That's about $3K of parts/labor in 3 weeks that the CPO paid. Not a pleasent thought if you are just about to buy a high milage model. I just topped 42K this week! In the 12K miles/22 months we have owned it you can also figure in balljoints/links etc. $1600 -$2000 CPO, Cam Position Sensor $200, Door Handle (fell off) $100, Door Lock Actuator $500 CPO, CV Joint Boots $300. You could be looking at any or all of these in the near future as many of these things (like ball joints) seem to go every 15K miles!
LEASE or at least buy a CPO as it will cover some of the bigger items. Some of my out of pocket expenses were mitigated as I have my own mechanic who charges a very low hourly rate compared to dealership. |
