Groaning when turning

Y'all,

I had the steering rack serviced on my x5 about a year and a half ago and since then it will occasionally make a groaning noise when turning quickly and hard. It sounds like when you wet your finger and rub it on a large piece of metal so that is vibrates and hums. It happens once every blue moon. When it got cold in November 2020, I remember it happening every morning for a month, but then it went away.

Power Steering fluid is at the level. Steering performance hasn't been impacted. It does it even when it's warmed up (at operating temperature for at least 5 minutes).

I have a 2007 535i that started making this noise, too. Has anyone experienced this? Is this the shop doing a shitty job or is there something else that could be problematic?
