I feel so dumb but I finally got this addressed. It was the shield not pushed in far enough. I had to re-drain the trans oil, pull the white locking tab down and remove/reinstall the mecatronics shield. I used a 27 mm socket (tip from one of the sites) and inserted it into the shield for more control when pushing it in. Pushed really hard and the locking tab clicked in. No more communication issues. any photos of the part you are referencing ? i can't picture it in my mind unless i've seen a drawing or photo of the part
