The saga continues Trans Failsafe Error and No Start
All this was my orig post. Starting a new thread. The car was back to normal for 2 weeks and then now the trans failsafe error is back along with not starting. When it last started I was able to pull code using INPA software. D358 – Can message/egs-error: gearbox – message egs1(ID 0x43f) absent rcv. No signal or value. Hoping somebody can help point me in the right direction on where/how to start investigating. Thanks! |

Wiring diagrams and A voltmeter will be needed. The optimum tool - a scope with graphing capabilities. Basically, you'll need to troubleshoot signals and voltages.
CAN diagnosis is a mystery to me. I've been learning watching YouTube videos by a few specialized diagnosis specialist. CAN resistance can be checked at the ODBII port. Readings should be 60 ohms. If it's not, something on the network is dropping in the communication loop. In your case, it's probably something in the gearbox circuit. You'll need to probe pins and wires to see where the signal is lost. I'm learning all this so I'm not much help now. I'm learning for possible future problems with my X5. Plus, all modern new vehicles with CAN.

eskirvin, thanks for the great tips. I am now better able to troubleshoot using the instructions in the link. I checked the wiring voltage to the different connectors feeding into the trans and they all check out. Now there is a gap with the ECM shield that I think is to much. I may have messed this up when I installed the replacement part. In one of the instructions it said that this should only be 3 MM but the connector in the picture of the trouble shooting guide looked a little different. The GAP in mine is 10MM. Before I start rebuilding Mecatronics wanted to give this a shot. What do you guys think?

I feel so dumb but I finally got this addressed. It was the shield not pushed in far enough. I had to re-drain the trans oil, pull the white locking tab down and remove/reinstall the mecatronics shield. I used a 27 mm socket (tip from one of the sites) and inserted it into the shield for more control when pushing it in. Pushed really hard and the locking tab clicked in. No more communication issues. Hope this helps the next guy. Thanks for looking.

Glad you sorted it.
Yeah, the mechatronic sleeve (what I assume you are referring to as the shield) can be tough to get seated all the way in.

Aureliusmax, its the picture with the blue arrow above. The part is being held by a locking tab that can only be accessed inside the transmission. For some reason I got the lock to engage in the wrong position without forcing it during the initial install. For anybody doing this job be very mindful of this sleeve or you will end up like me doing the job twice.
