I just had a similar problem today. Last night I was driving back from CT and the battery charging light came on. The the dash lite up like a christmas tree. Fortunately I got home but when I took the X5 out this morning it totally died. Had it towed to BMW of Manhattan and they identified the problem as the battery ($400) and the alternator ($1,200). Rather than pay those crooks, I had it towed back to the garage (upper manhattan).

Found an alterator online for under $200 and will pick up a battery at Strauss for under a $100.

Anyone know what is involved with swapping out the alternator on an X5? I have swapped out alternators on prior vehicles so I have an idea what is involved?
