Fuel pressure issue when filling tank ... any ideas?

Hi All - I'm midway through a 2k mile roadtrip in my 2005 X5 3.0. I've had an admittedly minor issue with this car for some time now that I'm wondering if any of you have experienced, or have any ideas on what the cause might be.

Here's the symptom: After a few hours on the road at highway speeds, I'll pull over to gas up. When I initially begin filling up the fuel nozzle will frequently shut off, usually in very short time, like the tank is full (though it's nowhere near). I'll even see fuel coming up into the filler neck briefly.

Sometimes I can adjust the angle of the fuel nozzle and it will work, and it always fills up as normal after a minute or two. It only happens after a long time at highway speeds ... never had a problem with in-town driving, and the car starts and runs pretty much perfectly otherwise. My workaround has generally been to use the restroom first then fill up. :-)

This has been happening for some time now, but this is the first time I've overcome general laziness to ask about it or give it much thought. Anyone ever experienced this? My first thought is a fuel tank venting issue.

Thanks in advance for the good counsel -

Chris
