Fuel pressure issue when filling tank ... any ideas?
Hi All - I'm midway through a 2k mile roadtrip in my 2005 X5 3.0. I've had an admittedly minor issue with this car for some time now that I'm wondering if any of you have experienced, or have any ideas on what the cause might be.
Here's the symptom: After a few hours on the road at highway speeds, I'll pull over to gas up. When I initially begin filling up the fuel nozzle will frequently shut off, usually in very short time, like the tank is full (though it's nowhere near). I'll even see fuel coming up into the filler neck briefly. Sometimes I can adjust the angle of the fuel nozzle and it will work, and it always fills up as normal after a minute or two. It only happens after a long time at highway speeds ... never had a problem with in-town driving, and the car starts and runs pretty much perfectly otherwise. My workaround has generally been to use the restroom first then fill up. :-) This has been happening for some time now, but this is the first time I've overcome general laziness to ask about it or give it much thought. I take the cap off first then by the time I get my credit card in etc. to get the pump working all is good. Some pumps are worse than others too.

I've seen similar issues with other manufacturers. On some, it seems the check valve gets stuck. The ball or cone to keep fuel from spilling due to a roll over. Venting is another issue.
I do the same thing. Open the gas cap first before anything else to fill up.

I just coming back from filling up at Sam's (not top tier) the 05 X3...not only do I take the gas cap off first but I untangle the pump hose most times. Im sure I've experienced what you describe but it's far from memory. Yes, I would say it's the pump itself...gas may come out super fast and therefore the "off" click.
My concern: I've read that if the engine stumbles right after filling up completely the gas tank...that's an indication/symptom that it's time to replace the gas tank pump? This has happened to the x in the more recent past. Sent from my REVVL V+ 5G using Tapatalk |

Another dynamic could be that especially on longer trips that the DME decided to do a tank leakage test and then didn't bother bleeding the pressure, not sure if it normally does or not, and then of course it will much longer for tank to vent when the cap comes of.
