Exactly, it all depends on your driving style and on where you live. Where I live, the highways are sometimes congested, but not usually at the times I'm driving, and when they are busy, they're still moving plenty and have plenty of hills and turns. Besides which, even driving on the interstate or whatever highways might be less fun to drive on, the extra power changing lanes/passing people, etc.. is certainly something I want.
I could see for some it may be just about getting the more expensive car regardless of whether or not you need or even want the bigger engine, I see plenty of soccer moms driving Cayenne Turbos and it makes me think just that. But I would think most BMW owners get BMW's for the driving experience and anyone getting a 4.8 instead of a 3.0 would actually want the extra power. If it's just the higher price tag/prestige... buy a Mercedes or a big boat Lexus SUV.
