3.0si or 4.8i
I ordered the 3.0si only b/c I couldn't justified having to pay $10k + more for the 4.8i here in Canada. |

I find the 3.0si had adequate power for my needs, and it doesn't guzzle gas like the 4.8i.

3.0 all the way. save some money and some more money on gas. to be honest, at this time when the gas price went crazy here in washington area, i would buy a honda civic rather than emptying my pocket on gas on an sav. i just bought 07 civic at honda at college park in md. and let my x5 stay home. i only drive the x5 when i need to.

I'd agree that the V8 isn't really worth 10G's. As for fuel consumption, both motors blow, so don't give it much weight IMO.
3.0 17/23 mpg 4.8 15/21 mpg

I agree with Wagner on the fuel consumption.....the 2 mpg difference between the 6 and 8 should not have any bearing on on your decision...unless you are driving 50K miles a year. |

The 3.0 makes more since for most people. I'm not sure how to 'justify' paying the extra 10k, unless your driving style really needs it. The highways here are so congested etc, it's hard to find any real rationale for it regardless of style. But for some, maybe it's just a prestige or mental thing knowing they have the V8.
Also, I consider a 10% difference in MPG to be significant. Over the course of time, it will save quite a bit of additional money. I'm not sure why people don't seem to think it's a big deal. I bet that if there was a gas station in the area that was 10% cheaper than the other ones, (e.g. $3.15 versus $3.50), people would line up around the corner to go there. Again, I would not use efficiency as my main consideration, but I do think one should think it through when making the choice. |

I have the 3.0 and am very pleased...there are times when I wish I had the 4.8, but only because I love a powerful car. I have never actually needed more power to pass or in any other situation. I live in a very flat region, so if you live in mountainous terrain you might want to consider the larger engine...otherwise the 3.0 is perfect for me.

I could see for some it may be just about getting the more expensive car regardless of whether or not you need or even want the bigger engine, I see plenty of soccer moms driving Cayenne Turbos and it makes me think just that. But I would think most BMW owners get BMW's for the driving experience and anyone getting a 4.8 instead of a 3.0 would actually want the extra power. If it's just the higher price tag/prestige... buy a Mercedes or a big boat Lexus SUV. |

....its just an extension of the same justification used to spend $50K on a 3.0 to sit on a congested highway |
