I have changed the oil on my 2000 4.4. Just followed the DIY. Didn't even need to use ramps or a jack. The only problem I had the first time was when removing the drain plug, the hot oil comes out pretty quick, if you unscrew it very slowly by hand and feel for the last thread you can pull it out without dropping the plug as the hot oil comes out. I don't think it matters what sequence you remove the filter. Just make sure the plug is reinserted before adding oil to the oil filter canister which prevents dry startup. Really pretty easy. I use the aftermarket Mann filter which is a little cheaper.
