Each time BMW starts a new project it gives it a new E code. E stands for Entwicklung. The spelling is probably wrong, but some German word along those lines...

As of late, BMW has been very ambitious. Starting lots of projects that don't necessarily equal real cars on the road... Hence why the E codes have gone up so fast in recent years.

BMW also just ran out of E codes and is now starting at F01, F02, etc...
