I'm not sure exactly what they call it but consider it a design number. The old style X5, years 2000-2006 was the E53. The new X5 is the E70. As BMW develops new models or complete restyles for current models they give it a new number.
I think someone posted the 2008 brochure yesterday.

Each time BMW starts a new project it gives it a new E code. E stands for Entwicklung. The spelling is probably wrong, but some German word along those lines...
As of late, BMW has been very ambitious. Starting lots of projects that don't necessarily equal real cars on the road... Hence why the E codes have gone up so fast in recent years. BMW also just ran out of E codes and is now starting at F01, F02, etc... |
