I cant comment on the X5's ability with this option but certainly when I had the 7 series it did not have that problem on any inclines whether give ways or lights or for extended periods.

I use the handbrake alot on the X when I am at lights etc, as its easy to apply and take off and again I have never had that problem.

The transmission also remains in drive which also holds the vehicle in position sometimes this alone can hold the X on an incline.
