Yes you should fix this before it expands. If the fiberglass is not damaged then just replace the gel-coat layer using the following method. Use either white polyester putty or grey car body putty. Even with white polyester putty it will be very difficult to match the original color. Make sure you mix the hardener and polyester together very well and the apply it into the break until it overflows. Once the putty is hard then sand it to level and finish it with 600 grit wet sandpaper. Then paint the repair using a paint as close as the original color and polish it with 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper and polishing putty to blend the color.
