I test drove both the Cayenne S ('06 AND '08 models) and X5 4.8i (as well as the RR Sport HSE) before deciding on the BMW. The X5 may have the same specs as the Porsche... but it feels significantly faster, sounds much better and gives a better connection to the road.
All the while, as I was driving the Cayenne and discussing the X5 I had tried on an hour before, the salesman went on about how the Cayenne is "sportier" and has better handling than the BMW. That is complete BS generated from the badge on the car's rear end. In this case, the BMW runs away with the "sportiness" factor... it just also happens to be far more comfortable with a much more modern interior.
Both of them leave the RR Sport in the dust, though. Even the Supercharged model can only run with a Toyota Highlander V6.
