How fast is the X5 4.8i?
Something got me thinking, the first thing I realised when I got in this thing and steped on the gas is that it has some serious power and driving stability.. if Im going fast and I make a sharp turn, I barely feel it. So it got me wondering, how fast is a 2008 X5 4.8i compared to other bmw cars? could it be considered in between the least fast bmw's and the fastest bmw's? or is it actualy more upper echelon in the speed (power, 0 to 60, etc.) department? |

In BMW NA's lineup, the X5 4.8i is about midpack. Lots of power, but also lots of weight to move. Look for 0-60 times in the upper 6s range. It'll run even, if not a tad bit slower than a 328i manual. However, compared to competitors' SUVs, it is a fair bit quicker than average. BMWs in North America have gotten lots of power and added gear ratios in many cases, thus pushing acceleration times down. Any BMW with the 3 litre twin-turbo runs 0-60 times in the mid 5s.
The slowest BMW in the NA lineup is the X5 3.0si, with a 0-60 time of around 8s. Figures are for comparison purposes only. Do not attempt on public roads, and obey posted speed limits and regulations. |

right, thanks for the reply.
which suv is faster in general? the X5 4.8i or the Cayenne S (not the Turbo or the S turbo, just the Cayenne S) I think these two (Cayenne S and X5 4.8i) are kind of even in specs and everything else. I just wanted to do some comparisons because I got an x5 and my brother has a cayenne and I havent had a chance to drive it yet. |

It'll be dead even. Both BMW and Porsche claim 6.4s 0-60mph acceleration times. Don't whatever you do, go drag racing to find out.

I test drove both the Cayenne S ('06 AND '08 models) and X5 4.8i (as well as the RR Sport HSE) before deciding on the BMW. The X5 may have the same specs as the Porsche... but it feels significantly faster, sounds much better and gives a better connection to the road.
All the while, as I was driving the Cayenne and discussing the X5 I had tried on an hour before, the salesman went on about how the Cayenne is "sportier" and has better handling than the BMW. That is complete BS generated from the badge on the car's rear end. In this case, the BMW runs away with the "sportiness" factor... it just also happens to be far more comfortable with a much more modern interior. Both of them leave the RR Sport in the dust, though. Even the Supercharged model can only run with a Toyota Highlander V6.

I will take this one step further...I owned a RR Sport supercharged for nearly 2 years (until I test drove the X5 4.8) - no comparison. RRS is big and heavy - really heavy. With 400hp, it has power, but also too much weight (it is something like 1,000 pounds heavier than the X). I loved its looks - but it was lacking in the fun department. I also test drove the new Cayenne Turbo (the 500hp beast) on the same day as testing the X5 4.8...still no comparison - really. The Cayenne handled like a ford expedition when cornering, and the acceleration and engined sound was not nearly as thrilling as in the X (which has 150 LESS horsepower). And don't get me started on the interior - cheap plastic everywhere, waaaaaay too many buttons all over the center console - only saving grace is the stitched leather dash which is really nice (but will cost extra, like everything on a porsche). Needless to say - I bought the X5 that day...and haven't looked back. IMO, there is no other SUV that is as much fun as the X. |

Excellent way to phrase it, Kuhne!: "Roars with Elegance"

The facelifted cayenne s is faster than the 4.8 in both manual and auto trim. I've seen numerous test where it pulls ahead by about half a car's length it also sounds more aggresive. The new ML500 (388ps) would be significantly faster than both, MB quote 5.8 to 100 and they are known to be conservative. Handling wise the ML is no match for either. I've seen a german test where they put the handling of the cayenne above that of the X5 which they found to be understeery at the track. The downside of the cayenne's stability system was that it would raise consumption by 1-2l per 100 because it has a separate little motor working to keep the car flat.
