They are direct replacements, just massively expensive. The ones for an E53 X5 run around $300 or so each which is crazy. A 2nd best option is to use the SAE blindzone setting recommendation which is what I do.

BTW I think they take some getting used to, I only drove the car for an hour or so but definitely felt a little dizzy from looking at the mirror.
