First ever post so be gentle please BMW X5 4.4i sport 2002

This morning the interior door handle appeared to go floppy and hence I was unable to exit the drivers side door. So had to climb out of the back doors. Central locking works fine and door opens from the outside. Is there a quick fix? How do I get at the handle without removing all the door panel. Any help gratefully recieved as I look an arse puling up in the car then climbing out of the back!!
