Two driving forces: Testosterone and cash consumption.
Lamborghini made tractors. Rich playboy owner buys a Ferrari, has a problem with the car, complains about it, gets dismissed by Ferrari, and so builds a car just to spite them. Testosterone. Then he goes bankrupt.
Iacocca buys them (more testosterone). He wanted an Italian car company for Chrysler. Then they run out of money.
An Indonesian playboy buys them (more testosterone). Then they run out of money (notice a pattern here?).
Audi buys them. They haven't run out of money yet, but stay tuned
Where it all started (and I think the tractors look better than the cars, at least than the Countach. The Miura, on the other hand, was beautiful):
