I just did a quick search on this board and found three models listed that other posters have successfully installed (Viper, and two others that I can't recall). If I was going to buy one I would buy one that I knew had been successfully installed on the X5, and not browse eBay.
They more often than not used separate remotes from scanning the posts.
On one vehicle, the seat memory no longer functioned.
On another vehicle, the power door locks no longer functioned.
On the third vehicle, seats and door locks worked, but you had to put your regular key in the ignition when you got in the car, or it stalled when you put it in gear.
There seem to be various approaches to maintaining your vehicle security system and immobilizer.
Earlier in this thread, a poster who installed a remote starter has disconnected it until the problems get sorted out. Doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement.
The conclusion was that yes, they can work, but often they aren't seamless. A good installer makes all the difference, more than the make of the unit. You should find an installer in your town with a good track record on BMWs, and ask them what model they recommend.
