If the blanket is thin enough, maybe you can try and push the door closed all the way? Maybe this will actually be better for the mechanism?

However, I'm thinking you might want to try and rip the blanket, if there's some give, first. Try this as a last resort because if the door is closed all the way then you might not be able to tear the blanket.
