I had this happen on my 5-series. I would place stuff in the rear passenger foot well since it was easy to grab and it would stay place. At random times it would be soaking wet there, and then it would dry out.

When I started tracking it, I swore it was when I went through a big puddle or the car wash and I swore I had a hole in my floorboard. Called the dealer and there was a crack in my vapor barrier.

Anyways, the point of the post is make sure you clean your carpets really well after you get the barrier replaced. I let mine go for a couple of weeks and it started smelling mildewy in there. Had to get out the Little Green Cleaning Machine and attack the carpet.
