Hey Scott,
I have a 01 3.0 with 95Kmiles
It's been a year now that i own it, and so far, all what failed is a CV boot and a window regulator... those items fail on all X5s. other than that, i have a PS hose leak, but i'm leaving it as is... just a little ATF to top up every year or so, no big deal
The car drives like a champ, so robust and calm, nothing to worry about. engine and trans seem to be reliable on those cars, and i plan to keep it till 150Kmiles (that's 6 years for me)
What to expect besides CV and regulators? i think hoses... all kinds of ruber tends to crack after 8 years, so all kind of hoses might leak... as i told you, for me, only the PS pressure hose has leaked so far, but i won't be surprised if I suffer from other leaks... Things that may also come into our ways as i learnt through this site, are water pump and alternator... knock on wood, i still did not have to replace any of those and hope will never have, but they are not that major repairs.
In general, it's a reliable car for its age, and if the price is good, save few dollars for some unexpected regular repairs... it's a great ride, and as RPX5 said: timeless design... enjoy
