Thoughts on '01 3.0 purchase

I am looking to purchase an '01 3.0 with 106k miles on it. I know the history of the vehicle as it belongs to a friend. He had a complete inspection done at the BMW dealership and all that came up was a possible suspension item, engine belts, and some A/C hoses, but nothing immediate. I know it has had some engine seals, windows regulators, fuel sending unit, and a few other things done. New brakes.

The price is right, but I am concerned about reliability.

What are you thoughts on an '01 3.0 with this many miles?

Any major concerns I should be aware of? Transmission/engine problems?? Others?

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

An '01 3.0 with 106k miles on it and you're asking
about reliability? No expertise on my part but
common sense would tell me that at this point
all bets are off it's a crap shoot.

There are some members here with way more miles than that on their X5's, some also say the 3.0 I6 is more apt to last longer than a V8. Odds are in your favor if you know the car has been well maintained to this point, but like Quicksilver said, it's a crapshoot.

Hey, if the price is right, go for it, add a few mods to update and enjoy, its a timeless design

Thanks for the input.

No doubt a bit of a crapshoot, but I guess you could say that for any machine... some fail at 10k, some 500k. I guess what I was looking for were any known issues with regards to higher mileage X5s that would make me want to stay away.

I have heard that the 3.0 could last longer too. I wonder why... seems like it would be under more stress to power the X5 than the 4.4.

Hey Scott,

I have a 01 3.0 with 95Kmiles

It's been a year now that i own it, and so far, all what failed is a CV boot and a window regulator... those items fail on all X5s. other than that, i have a PS hose leak, but i'm leaving it as is... just a little ATF to top up every year or so, no big deal

The car drives like a champ, so robust and calm, nothing to worry about. engine and trans seem to be reliable on those cars, and i plan to keep it till 150Kmiles (that's 6 years for me)

What to expect besides CV and regulators? i think hoses... all kinds of ruber tends to crack after 8 years, so all kind of hoses might leak... as i told you, for me, only the PS pressure hose has leaked so far, but i won't be surprised if I suffer from other leaks... Things that may also come into our ways as i learnt through this site, are water pump and alternator... knock on wood, i still did not have to replace any of those and hope will never have, but they are not that major repairs.

In general, it's a reliable car for its age, and if the price is good, save few dollars for some unexpected regular repairs... it's a great ride, and as RPX5 said: timeless design... enjoy

Should you stay away or not has got to be
your decision but remember..........

There are tons of threads round here
regarding transmissions, window regulators,
suspension, water pumps and so on.
In fact most people who visit here don't
come to brag about how great their ride
is. Instead they have some sort of problem.
A simple search with the numbers 2001 can
help you see what people are dealing with
then you can decide.

The older it gets you the more you can
reasonably expect that things are gonna break.
So following the mantra to "save your money"
Remember BMW means Bring My Wallet because
one thing for sure. It's gonna cost you and unless
you fix it yourself it's gonna be expensive.
