I have not heard the shallow pioneer and I can be totally wrong but it seems like the better subs are heavy and deeper.

The deeper the sub the more room it has to move up and down in turn moving more air.
I ended up going w/ the L5 8" as well. Once I make the completed enclosure look nicer, i'll make sure to post up pics. I went w/ something along the lines of Zero's box, but took a lot longer to make it use up as much space as possible w/o making it protrude past the access so I can keep it hidden.
