X5 35d is already in the shop for check engine light and the dealer gave me a 528i loaner with comfort seats. According to my SA he also requested that they run some additional tests on the oxygen sensor before replacing it. Congrats on the new X5. My 09 35d had the Check Engine Light (CEL) at 2,000 miles. Issue was a NOX (Oxides of Nitrogen) sensor. Service Advisor mistakenly wrote it up as "knock" sensor.
As we have diesels, the knock or "ping" sensor really doesn't apply, and is in fact, is how these engines run, i.e. knock on purpose. I looked at parts diagrams and ping sensor easy to find on gas engines (off block) but didn't expect and didn't see one on the diesel engine. I'm guessing here, but I think the NOX sensor functions in much the same way as the O2 sensor on the gas engine. The O2 sensor looks like it was called Lambda sensor on the parts diagram and was located on the exhaust manifold.
If others know, please correct me, unless the engine was seriously overheated, I don't know if the diesel engine could have a knocking problem, and thus, no knock sensor.
