OK I checked and my first hunch was correct, the trunk stops needed adjustment.
So here are the pictures I took, very easy less than 5 min job; use torx 25 to loosen the rubber stop then twist CCW until it's about 34mm, both sides. Make sure it's not too far out more than 36mm, then you'll likely get trunk lid not close message cause it won't latch securely. Now I can press the button from inside and the trunk stays open.
