Lexus has for some time offered rain-repellent windshields, which are silicone infused. I'd imagine this is a similar procedure. I can say from experience that it does help tremendously, working much better than Rain-X or other equivalent solutions (such as Zaino). I'm skeptical about the hardiness claims, though.
